I love my sleep. I really do. But I truly believe that sometimes you just have to suck it up and pop a “No Doze.”
Right before I was about to hit publish on this post I saw on article on Elite Daily entitled “Intelligent People All Have One Thing In Common: They Stay Up Later Than You.” I'm not saying I'm intelligent, my normal bedtime is around 10:00pm and last night I fell asleep at around 8:15, but I decided to check it out. Basically, the higher the IQ, the more likely you are to stay up late. So maybe all those times I spent up late is because I'm intelligent. Call it wishful thinking, but I'll take it. And I think my 3.7 hours of sleep fall in the now “intelligent” range.
12 hours, y'all. That's a pretty ridiculous amount of time to spend in one place, but it's what happened when our Ferry ride took 4 hours longer than it intended to.
If you remember, yesterday we left off in Athens. Our backpacks leaving sweaty marks on our
backs, we went to the ferry counter to collect our tickets.
The ferry was already an hour late. So we were reasonable and found wine. We bought 2 Euro wine in large plastic water bottles. I couldn't drink any of it because I correctly anticipated feeling sea sick.
After an almost 5 hour ferry ride that was supposed to take 2 and half hours (note to self, don't take the ferry unless you have an ample amount of time) we arrived on the tiny island of Santorini.
We were staying at Hotel Perissa (aka a Hostel) and Freddy (the owner) sent a driver to pick us up.
We told him we were hungry and he asked to join us. We threw our stuff
down in the hostel and and he took us for delicious, greasy kebabs at FB
Fai (supposed to be pronounced FBI).
When we got home at almost 2 am we picked bedrooms and then talked through the thin walls about plans for the next day. We wanted to be able to see the whole island in a short amount of time, so we decided on renting a car.
The hostel arranged for a car and it came in an hour. Just enough time for us to pack up and carry everything with us. The car was tiny, but was just big enough to hold 4 backpacks and 4 people. We hit up the nearest beach, “Perissa Beach” with black sand.
We went the long way, up the cliffs to get a view of the other side of the island. Then it was on to the next beach. The “Red” beach was full of deep, red-brown sand and a steep mountain side.
After the beach we wanted to get a good view of the city, see the stark white houses and blue topped domes. So we starting climbing, and we ended up on the top of many people's homes. But it was a spectacular view.
The water below was unbelievably clear.
After all that walking, we stopped for lunch and our view overlooked the island and, off in the short distance, you could see the volcano that formed Santorini what it is today.
Back on another ferry, being speedy tourists, it was time for Crete!
I could easily imagine a simple life on the island of Santorini. Eating yogurt, drinking wine and living in a tiny white house. Would you lose sleep for Santorini?
