Food has always been integral in my family. Like others, we congregate around the table to discuss our life, celebrate news, and overcome pitfalls. My family has always had a love for food and we cherish what it does to bring ours together.
My grandmother wrote a column for the Shreveport Times in Louisiana about her exquisite cooking. It was known all over the state (and the country in fact) that her cooking was superb. My aunt was the editor of Southern Living Magazine and is even working on a book about some of her favorite recipes that she and my grandmother used to make. (Writing and cooking are in our blood.) My mom cooks every year for our annual Christmas party for roughly 200 people.
I'm the one with the milkshake at the end of the table, sitting next to my Grandmother. My twin sisters are at either ends of the table trying to shove Strawn's Ice Box strawberry pie in their mouth.
Every Thanksgiving, we'd cram in my parents minivan and head to Shreveport to celebrate Thanksgiving at my grandparent's house. If I wanted to spend time with my grandmother, I knew I needed to be in the kitchen. She wasn't the warmest woman, but she would light up when talking about her latest dish.
I didn't appreciate it. I just thought that's what families do, they get together and there's food. Now, I finally understand the time, dedication, and effort it took to put a meal together for dozens of people. I often times realize that people show they care through cooking, at least that's what my grandmother did. She would articulate her love through her recipes.
So now, I want to pass on that tradition. I want to learn my grandmother's, my mother's, my aunt's, my mother in law's recipes and use those to show them how much I care. I think love is a home cooked meal, and I want to share the goodness with others.
