“London: a city that offers the world in one place.” – Stephen Fry
It's not often that I begin a guide with a quote, but it feels fitting for a city so rich with life. Everything you want to do or see can be found in London. History, nightlife, food, culture. Which also means it can be exhausting to know what exactly to do.

I grew up in London. My parents taught a study abroad and while they were teaching classes, I often walked the streets and learned as much as I could. Then I spent a year in nearby Oxford and ventured to London quite often.
So, I present my list of must do's along with a map.
This city is EVER changing. But here are some things you cannot miss.

Top Things to Do in London
Museums Worth Visiting
London is packed with amazing museums, and the best part? Many of them are free! I recommend picking just one or two to avoid burnout. Here are my favorites:
- Natural History Museum – lots of animal specimens and natural history- also a beautiful building.
- Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) – A stunning mix of art, fashion, and design. Plus, there’s a great café inside.
- National Portrait Gallery – A must for history and art lovers.
- British Museum – Home to world-famous artifacts like the Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles.
- Churchill War Rooms – Fascinating underground bunker from WWII (this one isn’t free, but so worth it!).
Iconic Landmarks & Historical Sites
- Westminster Abbey & St. Paul’s Cathedral – These two are the most famous churches in London, and both are absolutely breathtaking. They are a bit pricey, so give yourself time to explore properly.
- Tower of London – Home to the Crown Jewels. It’s one of the top tourist attractions in London, so book in advance.
- Tower Bridge – Not to be confused with London Bridge (which is much less impressive). Walk across for fantastic views.
- The Shard – This skyscraper offers some of the best panoramic views of the city. If you don’t want to pay for an observation deck ticket, grab a drink at one of the bars inside!
Theater in London: A Must-Do!
London’s theater scene is unbeatable, and tickets are much cheaper than Broadway. Here are some great options:
- Classic favorites: Mamma Mia! (I’ve seen it at least 20 times!), The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked.
- Newer shows: Back to the Future (amazing special effects), The Devil Wears Prada (getting great reviews), Mean Girls, Mrs. Doubtfire (hilarious!).
- Where to buy tickets: Check Leicester Square booths for last-minute deals or book online at London Theatre Direct.
Before your show, wander around Covent Garden – it’s full of cute shops, street performers, and great restaurants.
Best Neighborhoods to Explore
- Notting Hill – One of the prettiest areas in London, with colorful houses, cute cafés, and the famous Portobello Road Market.
- Borough Market – A must for food lovers. It’s one of London’s best markets, packed with incredible street food and gourmet treats. (Fun fact: Bridget Jones’s Diary and Harry Potter filmed scenes here!).
- Seven Dials & Leadenhall Market – Great for walking, shopping, and enjoying beautiful old-world architecture.
- Regent’s Park – London has more parks than any other big city, and this one is my favorite (I’m biased – my parents taught here!).
Where to Eat in London
London’s food scene is one of the best in the world. Here are my recommendations:
- Traditional British: Fish and chips, meat pies, and scones with cream and jam – you have to try them!
- Indian & Asian cuisine: London does this exceptionally well. Fun fact: Chicken Tikka Masala is considered Britain’s national dish.
- Fortnum & Mason – Instead of Harrods, I prefer shopping (and eating!) here. Their restaurant is fantastic.
