There’s nothing quite like the magic of Christmas markets in Europe, and after visiting over 100 Christmas markets across Europe in virtually EVERY possible way we knew that the absolute best way to go was a river cruise.
BUT, there was one problem. All the river cruises we went on didn't leave enough time at the destination. And not everything was included. I felt like I was nickeled and dimed as soon as I stepped on board. So, my husband Michael and I chartered our own and had two incredible weeks in Germany and France!
When I envisioned hosting a Christmas Market Cruise, my dream was to create something truly extraordinary—an unforgettable experience that combines the magic of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets with the comfort of luxury travel and the joy of community. And in 2024, that dream became a reality not once, but twice, as we chartered two incredible cruises along the Rhine River, bringing together 168 passionate travelers each week to experience the best of Germany and France during the holiday season.
Here’s a look back at our incredible journey, the highlights, and what made the 2024 Christmas Market Cruises so special.

Why Charter a Ship?
Over the years, Michael and I have traveled to more than 100 Christmas markets across Europe. We’ve explored them by train, car, and river cruise, and there’s no better way to see them than aboard a ship. Why? Because you unpack once and let the magic come to you. No lugging suitcases over cobblestones, no navigating crowded train stations, and no stress of planning where to stay or what to do next.
Chartering the Nicko Spirit allowed us to create a custom itinerary that catered to our group, ensuring maximum time at each destination, a perfect blend of excursions and free time, and multiple options for exploring iconic markets like Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Cologne.
The best part? The ship was exclusively ours, creating an intimate, welcoming atmosphere where everyone could connect, celebrate, and share in the joy of the season.
It was an atmosphere unlike any other! We had a group where we could chat before the ship, ask questions, adn get to know eachother. I absolutely ADORED watching friendships form. Truly it was so special.
I will never forget a woman on the trip telling me, “I can't believe I just met them, I feel like I've known them my whole life!”
River Cruise Itinerary: Christmas Market Classics in France and Germany
Cologne
We started our journey in one of Germany’s most magical cities during the holiday season: Cologne. Famous for its towering Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city offered a perfect introduction to the Christmas Market experience. This iconic landmark, once the tallest building in the world, houses the relics of the Three Wise Men and provides a breathtaking backdrop for the main market.
But Cologne is more than just its cathedral. It’s home to eight distinct Christmas markets, each with its own unique charm. From the Angel’s Market with its twinkling lights to the maritime-themed market near the Rhine, there’s something here for everyone. And, of course, we couldn’t resist enjoying the local Kölsch beer, served in small glasses at the perfect temperature. This stop set the festive tone for the week ahead!
Koblenz and Arenfels Castle
Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet, enchanted us with its blend of historic architecture and picturesque riverside views. We strolled through the old town, marveling at landmarks like the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), the Schängel Fountain, and the Church of Our Lady. The Christmas market here was intimate and cozy, offering a chance to shop for handmade goods and sip warming Glühwein.
We could easily walk on and off the ship to experience the Christmas markets or grab a bratwurst!
For those seeking a fairy-tale experience, the optional excursion to Arenfels Castle was a highlight. Nestled in scenic vineyards, this neo-Gothic castle dates back to the 1200s and offered not only panoramic views of the Rhine Valley but also a private Christmas market on its grounds.
The included tasting of local specialties was the cherry on top of a magical day.
We overnighted here so you can easily hop on and off the ship to explore more! And we brought on our favorite German band to serenade us into the night!
Rüdesheim and the Rhine Gorge
One of my favorite days! In the morning we cruised and then we had time to see the Christmas market in the day and night (as we do for all our stops!!!)
As we cruised along the Rhine Gorge, we were treated to breathtaking views of more castles per mile than anywhere else in the world. The towering cliffs and centuries-old fortresses were straight out of a storybook.
Our port city, Rüdesheim, charmed us with its half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and festive atmosphere. The included walking tour took us through the famous Drosselgasse, a narrow alley lined with quaint shops and wine taverns- it looks straight out of a movie! Then ended at the Mechanical Instrument Museum, where we marveled at fascinating music-making machines.
We had tons of time in the evening to explore the markets!
The optional excursion offered even more delights: a visit to a local coffee house to try the famed Rüdesheimer coffee, fortified with Asbach brandy, followed by a tasting at one of the region’s top wineries. It was a perfect blend of history, culture, and indulgence.
Heidelberg and Mannheim
Heidelberg stole my heart all over again. As someone who lived here, it’s a city I never tire of sharing with others. The romantic castle overlooking the Neckar River, the charming old town, and the sprawling Christmas market with over 100 festive stalls made this stop unforgettable. Our walking tour included highlights like the world’s largest wine barrel, the castle ruins, and the stunning views of the valley below.
Meanwhile, Mannheim provided a contrast with its Baroque grandeur and unique grid layout. For those who opted for the optional excursion to Bad Dürkheim, the in-depth wine tasting showcased the region’s incredible varietals, paired with local sausages and sparkling wine. YES, we did drink wine at 10 am in the morning and we loved it!!
Strasbourg and the Black Forest
Strasbourg, the self-proclaimed Capital of Christmas, truly lived up to its name. With its 100-foot Christmas tree, 300+ stalls, and over-the-top holiday decorations, it felt like stepping into a winter wonderland. Our guided tour included must-see sights like the Notre Dame Cathedral with its astronomical clock and the picturesque Petite France district, where half-timbered houses line the canals.
Truly just wondering the streets is an adventure. Great food (get the mulled orange wine with honey- it's incredible!) and just enjoy. The streets are literally BURSTING.
There are even Baccarat chandeliers. ON THE STREET!
The optional excursion to the Black Forest was equally enchanting. We explored the Vogtsbauernhof Open Air Museum, learning about traditional Schwarzwald culture, from cuckoo clocks to folk costumes, and enjoyed a slice of the famous Black Forest cake.
The stop in Gengenbach, home to the world’s largest Advent calendar, added a magical finishing touch. I also particularly like it because… they have BUTTER BEER!
Mainz and Wiesbaden
I think Mainz market is so underrated. Y'all. I love Chimney cake but it's SO hit or miss. Mainz officially has the best one I've ever tried! The food in Mainz is UNREAL.
Mainz offered a fascinating blend of history and holiday cheer. The hometown of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the modern printing press, is steeped in significance, and you can even visit the Gutenberg Museum to see two of the original Bibles that revolutionized the world here! The Christmas market here, set against the backdrop of the 1,000-year-old cathedral, felt like stepping into a fairy tale.
Wiesbaden, available as an optional excursion, provided a more refined experience. This spa town, known for its grand architecture and luxury, dazzled us with its stunning Christmas market and festive atmosphere. The soaring spires and opulent buildings made it a feast for the eyes.
Cologne (Again!)
Our journey came full circle as we returned to Cologne. This city, with its incredible markets and festive energy, was the perfect place to say goodbye. Whether it was exploring the many themed markets, enjoying live music, or indulging in one last mug of Glühwein, we soaked up every last moment of the holiday magic.
We said “Auf Wiedersehen” with full hearts and memories that will last a lifetime.
Onboard Experience: A Floating Christmas Wonderland
Our ship was more than just a mode of transportation; it was our home for the week and an integral part of the experience. Built in 2021, the ship’s modern design, panoramic windows, and luxurious amenities made it feel like a moving boutique hotel.
- Dining: With three restaurants onboard, the food was nothing short of exceptional. From casual bites to multi-course meals inspired by local cuisine, every meal was a treat.
- Drinks: All drinks were included (yes, even top-shelf alcohol!), which meant we could toast to the season with wine, cocktails, or beers whenever we pleased.
- Relaxation: The ship offered plenty of spaces to unwind—whether it was the sun deck, sauna, or cozy lounge with panoramic views of the Rhine’s castles and cliffs.
A moment for the food. Truly a work of art and so tasty! One of the reasons we picked this cruise line and ship is it's some of the best food I've ever had!
The onboard gala dinner was another highlight. Picture this: a beautifully decorated dining room, delicious food, festive music, and a room full of laughter and new friends.
The People: The Heart of the Cruise
One of the most magical parts of hosting this trip was the incredible people who joined us. Whether traveling solo or with a loved one, everyone brought their own unique story, excitement, and energy to the cruise.
Our guests ranged from first-time European travelers to seasoned market-goers, and by the end of the week, strangers became friends. The onboard camaraderie extended to excursions, dinners, and even late-night chats in the lounge.
For me, this sense of community was what made the trip truly unforgettable.
I've already gotten messages of people getting together to do meet ups and visit eachother! The friendships that are made are incredible.
Some highlights
I will never forget dancing to the band, having our cruise director, Mariia, read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (I cried!), taking pictures by the Christmas tree, the crew dancing with us to Satalana, toasting newly engaged and married couples.
We soaked up as much Christmas spirit as we possibly could!
There was a Christmas market stall in Rudesheim selling Amazon returns and… of course, some of our group bought a few packages. One was safety vests- they wore them nightly. One was a banner that we put up.
As I left the ship, I helped remove the banner with the help of the crew staff. “Your group was the best this year!” he told me.
I have to agree.
Merriment, joy, happiness, memories.
As I look back on the 2024 Christmas Market Cruises, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude—for the amazing group of travelers who joined us, the seamless coordination from our cruise partners, and the magical destinations that welcomed us with open arms (and lots of Glühwein).
These trips were more than just cruises—they were celebrations of the season, opportunities to connect with like-minded travelers, and experiences that reminded us all of the joy and magic of Christmas.
