2024 Cologne Christmas Market Dates
Since there are seven markets throughout the city of Cologne, I'll be giving you exact dates below for each! But here's a general look. The 2024 Christmas Market dates for Cologne are November 18 to December 23, 2024.
Map
Here's a map of all of the Cologne Christmas Markets!
🎄 Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market
Picture this: the Cologne Cathedral towering above you, lit up with thousands of Christmas lights, as you wander through one of the most iconic Christmas markets in Europe. The market sits right next to the cathedral, making it feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale.
- Dates: November 18 – December 23, 2024
- Hours: Sunday-Wednesday: 11 am – 9 pm; Thursday-Saturday: 11 am – 10 pm
- Location: Right next to the Cologne Cathedral
The highlight? The towering Christmas tree in the center of the market and live music performances that will sweep you off your feet. Yes, it’s crowded, but that’s part of the charm. Plus, the view of the cathedral is breathtaking, especially at sunset when the market glows beneath the Gothic spires.
🎄 Heinzels Wintermärchen (The Gnome Market)
This one is pure fun. If you love whimsy, this is where you need to be. The Gnome Market is split into two sections: Alter Markt and Heumarkt. Expect Ferris wheels, ice skating rinks, and the most charming little gnome figurines scattered throughout the market. It feels like you’ve stepped into a storybook, and the gnomes are there to guide you through.
My top tip: KEEP WALKING. People often think this market is just half of the stalls with the gorgeous twinking candles. You have to keep walking to get to the skating rink.
- Dates: November 25 – December 23, 2024 (Ice rink open until January 5, 2025)
- Hours: 11 am – 10 pm daily
- Location: Old Town, about 200 meters from the Cathedral
This is hands down my favorite market. Between the ice rink, the adorable gnome décor, and the endless food stalls, it’s the kind of place that will make you feel like a kid again. Don’t leave without grabbing a cup of mulled wine and taking a ride on the carousel!
🎄 Markt der Engel (The Angel Market)
Now, imagine walking into a forest of twinkling white lights. The Angel Market is sophisticated and dreamy, filled with artisan stalls and elegant Christmas decorations. If you’re a fan of unique, handmade gifts, this is your spot. It’s a little more refined than the Gnome Market but just as magical.
- Dates: November 18 – December 23, 2024
- Hours: Sunday-Thursday: 11 am – 9 pm; Friday-Saturday: 11 am – 10 pm
- Location: Neumarkt
The highlight here? Look for the angels on horseback wandering through the market. Yes, they’re real, and yes, it’s just as magical as it sounds.
🎄 Cologne’s Hafen Weihnachtsmarkt (The Harbor Market)
This one’s for the nautical lovers! Set right by the Chocolate Museum along the Rhine, the Harbor Market has a maritime theme. It’s smaller and more intimate than the other markets but has a unique charm. The stalls resemble boats, and you’ll find crafts with a seaside twist. If you’re in the mood for something different, this is the place.
- Dates: November 15 – December 23, 2024
- Hours: Sunday-Thursday: 11 am – 9 pm; Friday-Saturday: 11 am – 10 pm
- Location: Near the Chocolate Museum
A must-try? The seafood specialties and, of course, the chocolate treats from the nearby museum.
🎄 Cologne’s Nikolausdorf (St. Nicholas Village)
If you’re looking for tradition, this is it. Nikolausdorf feels like a village frozen in time, with wooden stalls selling hearty German fare and festive drinks. The market is centered around St. Nicholas, and you’ll find more than enough stalls serving up sausages and mulled wine to warm your soul.
- Dates: November 18 – December 23, 2024
- Hours: Sunday-Thursday: 11 am – 9 pm; Friday-Saturday: 11 am – 10 pm
- Location: Rudolfplatz
🎄 Cologne’s Stadtgarten Christmas Market
Last but not least, the Stadtgarten Christmas Market is tucked away in a park, giving it a more intimate and cozy feel. It’s perfect for those looking to escape the bigger crowds and experience a more local vibe. The stalls here change weekly, so there’s always something new to discover.
- Dates: November 15 – December 23, 2024
- Hours: Monday-Friday: 4 pm – 9:30 pm; Saturday-Sunday: 12 pm – 9:30 pm
- Location: Stadtgarten Park
Hop on the Mini Christmas Train
One of the most magical parts of Cologne’s Christmas markets is the mini Christmas train that connects the four main markets. Why walk when you can ride a festive little train from market to market? It’s hop-on, hop-off, and leaves every 15 minutes, making it super convenient to explore all the markets in one day.
Pro Tip: The train makes stops at the Cathedral, Old Town, Neumarkt, and Harbor Market, so you can easily plan your route. We picked it up for the first time in front of the cathedral—super fun and a great way to rest your feet while still soaking in the festive spirit!
Don’t Forget the Mugs!
One of the best souvenirs you can get from a Christmas market is the mugs. Each market in Cologne has its own unique mug design, and trust me, you’ll want to take one (or two) home. They’re festive, fun, and make the perfect keepsake to remember your time at the markets.
What to Eat at the Cologne Christmas Markets
Arrive hungry because Cologne knows how to do Christmas food. Here are some must-try treats:
- Raclette: Melted cheese heaven, usually served over bread or potatoes.
- Bratwurst: A classic, of course.
- Baumkuchen: A layered tree-shaped cake that’s as beautiful as it is delicious.
- Hot Chestnuts: Warm, roasted, and perfect for snacking as you stroll.
Cologne’s Christmas markets are the perfect mix of tradition, whimsy, and festive fun. Whether you’re sipping Glühwein under the shadow of the cathedral or ice skating at the Gnome Market, you’re in for a holiday experience you won’t forget. So bundle up, grab your Christmas spirit, and get ready for some serious festive magic!
