I'm nosy. We all are. I love to know how other people spend their time, what they do with their day, and what they're really up to. It's always interesting to see what a day in the life is like, especially for bloggers. It seems we're always up to something. So when I saw Taylor post about her “day in the life” I knew I had to show off my typical day.
I'd like to warn you: I am a bit of hermit lately. I know this makes me extra cool. Just remember that sometimes I leave the house, but recently I get zoned into the computer screen.
So grab a cup of coffee or diet coke and let's take a look at what really happens at HIB headquarters (never called my blog HIB, and don't plan on making that a habit.)
Note: most days don't include me trying to eat flowers for breakfast as pictured above.
Wake up at about 6:45-7:00 am. I do like to get up around the same time every day. I know this isn't that early, but I really need 8 hours. I can be a real grump if I don't get enough sleep.
I'd like to say I start working out immediately, but it's just not true, at all. Usually, I like to check my email to make sure nothing immediate needs my attention. Which is silly, I know. It's not like my job is to detect bomb threats. But if I don't check my email first thing, I get antsy.
After checking my email/blog/scrolling through Instagram for a bit, I work out. Lately my workouts have been on a little bit on the lazy side. I'll go for a bike ride, or walk on the treadmill. But this week I'm restarting Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Workout. It sucks. It's hard. I know it's worth it.
Workout and (sometimes shower) complete, I'll make breakfast, usually something quick like a breakfast bar. Then I'll answer emails again. I know I should segment my email answering time, but I love getting emails back quickly. This echoes from my time at Dave and Buster's. When I worked there in Special Events (the headquarters was in Dallas, I didn't work at the actual store), it was essential to answer emails in a timely manner for the client's sake. And this kind of stuck. So I check email, a lot.
Next, I'll light a candle. It's that time of year when I need a candle burning to feel inspired. So, Sweater Weather it is. I'll reply on social media, maybe Instagram something, like my hand on my planner. My friends make fun of my Instagram a lot. It's fine. I know it, you know it, they know it. But it's pretty dammit! And it's funny.
At about 10:30 am I write my blog post for the next day. I like to schedule posts at least a day ahead. I like to get ahead so I know I'll have time for everything else, it just makes me feel better. So, I write and schedule my blog posts and social shares ahead of time. I also take a lot of time on posts. Most likely, I started writing this post a while ago.
For example:
This post was started Sunday night. I spent an hour on it. I spent a good hour and a half on Monday editing it, adding photos, and scheduling it for today.
Next I'll have lunch and I'll usually eat at my desk. Sometimes, I'll take the dogs out or take them for a walk at a nearby park.
After lunch I might have a consult but I spend the majority of the rest of the work day working on my course. This can mean: recording video, editing video, updating the course site, working on a newsletter for members, setting up various tutorials, creating worksheets and cheat sheets… etc. There's a lot that goes into this.
At about 5pm, Michael will start asking me if I'm done working and I'll roll my eyes and tell him I need 20 more minutes. This usually turns into about an hour. I like to:
– Answer emails
– Edit blog posts
– Work on a freelance writing piece
– Reply on social media
– Look through my planner to make sure I've crossed off all of my “to-dos”
Then I'll break (finally) for dinner. Michael and I've been doing e-meals for the past 3 years now and I don't see any sign of us quitting. We like to cook at home because it's healthier and cheaper.
At night, we're usually:
– Cooking
– Snugging the pups
– Watching a TV show (although we don't really have one right now we're watching, we might watch part of SNL)
– I'll go back to work
At night I like to check emails again, polish up posts, and work on the course a little bit more. It just makes me feel better. All of this is done with a glass of wine.
And that's about it! Aren't you jealous of how cool I am? Secretly, I love this. Working from home, near my pups, is the best. And when you like your work it's really not work at all.
