A weekend post about dogs? No one's surprised. It happened last weekend and the weekend before. What can I say? The dogs are fun to hang around. But this story is a little different.
Right now, I have taken a break from pulling burs out of Millie's hair. The count right now is around about 236 million. And we're about halfway through. This is a guess, of course. But it's probably pretty accurate.
You see, we took the dogs to Cedar Ridge Nature Preserve. The weather in Texas is impeccable and we wanted to hike while this pre-Fall weather lasts. We woke up at 8am, (which was early, considering we didn't get to bed until 1am) and packed up the dogs. The hike was great. We started off doing 5 miles, but added on an extra one since we were feeling so good.
Millie and Hugo like to go off the path and sniff around. As we were rounding out the last mile, we noticed Millie had some burs on her head. That's pretty normal, her hair is long and it's easy that she gets a few dozen when we go on a hike. With spaniels you generally keep a comb handy to pull them out when you get home. So we didn't think much of it. These prickly seeds are all around Texas and stick pretty easily.
Then she ran off a few feet, hot on the scent of some animal. When she came back she looked like this:
This picture doesn't even do it justice. Her fur was matted from head to toe (especially her head) with the tiny burs. I have never seen so many in my life. To top that off she looks like she's wearing a headdress like Cleopatra or the Queen of England.
Michael and I are currently taking shifts on removing these terrible tiny seeds. This story doesn't have much point to it, expect that I just had to share this picture of this poor dog, who let me tell you could care less. She will step in cactus, hop over sharp sticks that nick her stomach, and of course, get tangled up in burs.
Any grand ideas of how to efficiently get these out are welcome!
P.S. I have a few sponsored posts coming up this week- hope you'll bare with me.
