I am super, ridiculously low maintenance about my hair. I wash and go, and often show up to places with wet hair. It's embarrassing really. I really should put more effort in. I'm working on it. So today, I have Ashley from The Grits Blog to teach us all how to tease your hair properly. After all, the higher the hair, the closer to God.
If you want to take your hair to the next level – tease it. Yes, it's true – you won't be able to run your fingers through your hair – but, yes it's true, your hair will look like you just walked out of the hair dresser's shop. All you need to accomplish a good hair tease is teasing comb and flexible hold hairspray.
To begin, start slightly past the half way point toward the back of the top of your head. Grab a section and, using the fine tooth end of the teasing comb, start about halfway up the hair shaft and pull the comb down. Repeat multiple times until you get the desired teasing thickness.
I suggest starting at the point I mentioned above and then going down the back of your head – kind of like a mohawk. Then starting next to your original beginning point, work your way out and down the side of your head eventually making your way towards the front of your head.
The finished look after teasing your hair ain't pretty and sure as heck ain't polished. The point of the teasing is to give your hair volume and texture.

To smooth it out – do NOT comb your hair out, otherwise you will have to start all over. What you need to do is to lightly, using your fingers, smooth it out. Go over your entire head until you are satisfied.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
(1) Your hair will relax, so don't worry if your hair is Texas style big hair. Personally, that's how I love my hair to look – so you wouldn't get weird looks from me if you have big hair. On top of that I think big hair is making a come back.
(2) Once you get to a point to where you are about to begin nitpicking your hair's style – stop. Take it from me – one time I actually pulled all of my teasing out and had to start over because every 3 seconds I was like oh let me smooth this piece, then that piece. Just stop while you are ahead.

Teasing makes such a difference! I love the volume and shape. I also feel like I have more control over my hair style and that the style actually lasts longer overall.
By the way, I was able to accomplish this style with just a blow dry using a round brush – no heat tools required! I did that by blowing my hair out in layers on high heat and then immediately teasing my hair and setting with hair spray.
