“What photography gear do you use?” As a travel photographer, blogger, and content creator this is one of the top questions I get.
As a travel content creator and influencer, it's important to have the right photography gear to capture stunning photos and videos on the go. After decades of research and traveling to nearly 60 countries, we've found the perfect set of equipment to document our adventures. In this blog post, we'll go over each piece of gear and how they can benefit travel content creators.
Let's get real, my husband Michael did all the research. And I'm not lying when I say that he spent YEARS researching this. He's very meticulous about his research and it's proved very worth it! After over a full year of researching, he decided on the Canon R5. But, there's much more to pictures than just the camera. There's the lens, bag, gear, and so much more!
We've even been interviewed by Adorama about the camera gear we use!
Our first camera, a Nikon, we had for seven years! But it was high time to upgrade. No amount of cleaning could help this camera. If you're looking for an introduction to camera and photography, check out this blog post Michael wrote detailing why he picked this camera.

Camera Gear Breakdown
To make things easier, here's everything we use to take pictures and videos. Below I'll discuss why we chose these products and how we use them.
Think of this as your must have gear for your content creator kit.
You can find all my gear in one place on Amazon here.
Camera Basics
First up, let's go over some things you'll need.
A great starting point for your photography gear is a camera body. We recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. This type of camera body has great image quality and can be used for both stills and video. Additionally, having a variety of lenses is important for getting different perspectives and capturing different types of images.
The next essential item you'll need are memory cards. Memory cards are used to store your photos and videos, so you'll want to purchase the highest quality and speed available. Make sure to get multiple cards in case you run out of space in the middle of capturing a moment.
Third, of course you'll need a camera strap. A camera strap is a must for travel photographers and content creators. Not only does it keep your camera secure, but it also helps you have easy access to your camera and take photos quickly.
Finally, you'll need a bag to carry all your gear. Choose a bag that has enough space for all your lenses, camera body, strap, and memory cards. You'll also want a bag that is comfortable to carry while traveling and can protect your equipment from wear and tear. I like this camera bag that has a weatherproof feature.
With these items, you'll be well on your way to becoming a travel content creator and capturing stunning photos and videos on the go. From breathtaking landscapes to beautiful people, you'll have all the equipment you need to share your adventures with the world.
The Best Travel Camera Bodies
If you're a travel influencer or blogger, let's look at the best camera bodies to start with! Now, I know firsthand that it can be difficult to settle on one specific brand. With this in mind, below are multiple options for each section so you have plenty of choices.
Best for beginners: Sony Alpha a6400 Mirrorless Camera
If you're a beginner I love Sony Alpha a6400 Mirrorless Camera! It's so easy to use, a great price and lightweight.
This is also really nice for vlogging as well.
Best for advanced: Canon R5 EOS Full Frame
f you're more experienced content creator, I would highly suggest the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Camera. This device will provide first-class images and videos with a plethora of functions that guarantee satisfaction! Also, for those just starting out in photography, consider checking out the Canon EOS Rebel T7i / EOS 800D. It is one of Canon's leading entry-level DSLRs featuring a 24.2 megapixel sensor to capture vivid shots even when higher ISO settings are required.
The camera also offers remarkable touchscreen usability which makes editing much easier than ever before! All in all, it is an outstanding choice for amateurs searching for high image quality at beginner level prices.g as well.
Content Creator Must Have: iPhone 14 Pro Max
Sincerely, the most important tool I have! iPhone is the best for capturing videos and photos on the fly. I also edit all of my videos together on my iPhone.
Our Camera Pick for Travel Photography and Video
Let me tell you, Michael spent YEARS researching this camera. We went into camera stores, held many cameras, dreamed about them, wrote pro and con lists, and finally decided on the Canon r5 full frame camera. This camera is a game-changer for photographers who are always on the move. It has a high-resolution sensor, fast autofocus system, and 8K video capabilities, making it perfect for capturing stunning images and videos. The Canon r5 is also weather-sealed, which means you can take it out in any weather condition without worrying about damaging it.
As you take photos on your travels, or just carrying a camera in general, you want a camera that can keep up with your lifestyle, and the Canon r5 does just that. You'll be able to capture every moment and create beautiful content that you can be proud of.
To protect the Canon EF 24-105mm lens that we use with our Canon r5, we always use the Canon Lens hood. The lens hood is designed to block stray light from entering the lens and causing unwanted flares or glares in your photos. It also provides protection from accidental bumps and scratches that can damage your lens while traveling.
To enhance the quality of our photos even further, we use the 77MM Lens Filter Kit by Altura Photo. This kit includes various filters, including a UV filter, CPL filter, and ND filter, that can help reduce glare, enhance color, and control the amount of light entering the lens. These filters are essential for outdoor photography and can help you capture stunning landscape shots. This is especially important when capturing beach photos!
When it comes to stabilizing our shots, we rely on the GEEKOTO Tripod, a versatile camera tripod that can be used with both cameras and phones. The GEEKOTO tripod is lightweight, compact, and easy to carry around, making it perfect for travel content creators who are always on the go. It also has a ball head that allows for easy adjustment of the camera angle, and it can support up to 17.6 lbs of weight, making it suitable for larger cameras and lenses.
Michael spent so long researching this dang tripod but man it's been worth it. We also use the tripod mount for our phone for videos too! Here's a photo I took using the tripod:
We rely heavily on the iPhone 14 Pro Max for both photos and videos. The camera on the iPhone 14 Pro Max is incredibly advanced, with a triple-camera system that can capture stunning photos and videos. It also has a night mode feature that can help you capture great shots in low light conditions. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is also lightweight and compact, making it a great backup camera for travel content creators.
Honestly, if you can only buy ONE thing, I'd buy an iPhone. It's so easy to just have everything you need in your pocket. We use our tripod and the additional tripod mount for our phone to capture photos and videos of ourselves.
When it comes to editing our photos, we rely on the MacBook Pro 16″ M2 Max. This powerful laptop has a fast processor and a large screen, making it ideal for editing photos in programs like Lightroom. It's also lightweight and compact, which makes it easy to take with you on the go.
I could write a love letter to this laptop y'all. It has everything you need in one package – fast processing, lots of RAM, crazy great graphics, and a good battery life. As a content creator, blogger, and someone writing a book, this is a game changer!
In addition to our primary gear, we also use other accessories to help us capture and store our photos. We use the SONY Cfexpress Tough Memory Card to store our photos, which is a high-speed memory card that can handle extreme conditions. We also use the ProGrade Digital CFast and SD UHS-II Dual-Slot Memory Card Reader to transfer our photos quickly and easily from the memory card to our laptop. Finally, we use the SAMSUNG T5 1Tb Portable Solid State Drive to back up all of our photos, ensuring that we don't lose any precious memories while on the road.
We also rely on the Altura Photo Camera Body and Lens Strap to securely attach our camera to our body, making it easier to carry around and keeping it secure while we’re shooting. This camera strap is adjustable and comfortable, and it can hold up to 15.4 lbs, making it suitable for larger cameras and lenses.
What is the best type of camera for travel photography?
If you're looking for the best type of camera for travel photography, you'll want to find a camera that not only has great image quality, but is also lightweight and compact enough to carry with you on the go. A great option is a mirrorless camera, which offers the same quality as a DSLR but in a much more lightweight and compact body. With a mirrorless camera, you'll also be able to switch out lenses quickly, allowing you to get the best shot in any situation. Plus, you'll be able to carry plenty of memory cards with you so you don't run out of space. Don't forget a durable camera strap so you can easily carry your camera with you everywhere!
We went with the Canon R5 mirrorless camera as our primary travel photography gear. It has an incredible 45 megapixel full-frame sensor, 8K video recording, and a 5-inch touchscreen lcd display. Plus, it's somewhat lightweight and compact, making it easy to take with us on our travels. We also have a variety of additional lenses to help us capture the best shots no matter where we are.
However, this camera is definitely heaving that our first camera. But MUCH more capable.
What lens should I use for travel photography?
When you're traveling, the most important part of your camera kit is the lens you choose to bring along with you. The lens you choose will depend on your style of shooting and the type of photos you want to take. For instance, if you’re looking for large buildings or landscapes, you’ll want a wide-angle lens. On the other hand, if you’re capturing more close-up photos of people and wildlife, you’ll want to opt for a telephoto lens. If you’re looking to capture a mix of both, then a mid-range zoom lens is probably best. Don’t forget to bring along extra memory cards, a spare camera body, and a camera strap to ensure that you’re prepared for any type of shot.
What is the best camera bag for travel photography?
If you're a travel photographer, you want to make sure you have all your gear ready when you hit the road. One of the most important pieces of gear for capturing your memories on the go is a great camera bag. With so many options out there, it can be hard to decide which is the best one for you. But, don't worry! We've got your back.
When it comes to the best camera bag for travel photography, look for one that is lightweight, spacious, and has plenty of compartments. This way, you can easily access all your gear, including lenses, memory cards, and camera body, without having to rummage around. You should also be sure that it has a comfortable and adjustable camera strap so you don't have to worry about it digging into your shoulders.
Finally, look for a bag that is designed specifically for travel photography. That means it should be waterproof and dustproof, and also have some sort of padding. This will help keep your gear safe and secure, no matter where you go.
Special tips or tricks for travel photography
If you’re an avid traveler and a passionate photographer, then you know the importance of having a reliable camera to capture all your journeys. To make sure you take the best pictures possible when you’re away on your travels, here are some top tips and tricks to keep in mind:
• Invest in extra memory cards. Having a spare memory card on hand is essential, especially if you’re traveling to a remote place with no access to a computer. Make sure you have enough cards to store all your photos and don’t forget to back them up regularly.
• Pack light. Packing a heavy camera body and all its accessories can be a hassle, so consider bringing a lightweight camera that can fit in your pocket and still take great shots.
• Be prepared. Before you hit the road, make sure your camera is in good working condition and that you have all the necessary accessories (extra lenses, batteries, filters, etc.).
• Get comfortable. If you’re planning to take lots of photos, invest in a comfortable and adjustable camera strap or neckline strap. This will make it easier for you to take photos without straining your neck or arms.
• Protect your camera. Weather can take a toll on your camera, so be sure to have a waterproof case or bag to protect it from the elements.
• Have fun! Don’t forget that photography is supposed to be enjoyable, so don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with it.
Michael always says the best shot is one you get. Meaning, just take a picture, it doesn't need to be perfect. If you are worried, just take a photo in automatic. You can practice manual and get the shot when you're comfortable.
