  • “London is the whole world in one place.” I disagree. Add in Paris and THEN you’ve really got the whole world. My two favorite places in the world and they’re just a train ride away. I’ve got an itinerary visiting both in a week with detailed guides, maps, and everything to do in each city. I’m not even gonna lie, it’s epic. Link in bio or stories! (Maybe one of my fav posts I’ve written!) #heleneinengland #heleneinfrance P.S. the blog post has tons of photos too, none of which are included here, so much more to look at 😍
  • Me on Instagram vs me on Instagram Stories 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ When we lived abroad my mom came to visit after we’d been in Germany for about 6 months. We decided to go to Bern, Zurich, and Basel but all the hotels were so expensive. So we got an Airbnb. My mom’s first in Europe. Well the one in Zurich the guy was actually at his house when we stayed but he seemed nice enough and we’d rarely see him anyway. One night we came home late and all went to bed. My mom got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and there was the Airbnb host, butt-naked in the middle of winter, making eggs at 4am. It’s safe to say that was her last not private Airbnb. 😂🙈 WHY did I tell you this story? Because stories are what connect us. And I find it’s even easier to connect and relate on Instagram stories. Starting next Monday I’m hosting a free 7 day Instagram Stories Challenge! AND just for participating I’m giving away $500 (and with other prizes along the way!) Link in bio or stories
  • Whenever I think I’d like to tell someone how I feel on their Instagram I ask myself: does this affect me personally? If my answer is no, I don’t do it. Which 99.999999% of the time that’s the answer. People are always going to live their life in a way you disagree with. It’s interesting OF COURSE to have different views and discuss them from a kind place (which I love because I love discussions). But being negative when you don’t have to just makes mostly you unhappy. Also yes, in fact, somewhere in that coat are 2 hands.
  • Looks are deceiving. On Instagram it appears that I spend frivolously and have this care-free, jet setting lifestyle. The truth is… that’s only partially true. ⁣ My family has an annual Christmas party and many of the people who came were some of the first time I’ve seen them since moving back to America from living in Germany 3 years. The top question: what are you going to do for work now?⁣ My answer: The SAME damn thing. ⁣ Most people think that Michael and I flitted off to Europe and traveled for fun. We did. But there was no flitting involved.⁣ 1. We saved up $45,000 in addition to our other savings for a “just-in-case” fund⁣ 2. I was making more money on my blog than I was at my corporate job⁣ 3. We lived SUPER minimally in Europe. As in we had exactly 1 cracked plastic bowl, dining furniture the previous owners left… outside (that we dragged in), and Michael built a good deal of our furniture. And it was just fine. ⁣ 4. When we travel we make sure the experiences we choose count. Yes, sometimes we stay in fancy hotels, but sometimes we don’t. It’s about balance. ⁣ I know that so often we’re told to buy the plane ticket, take chances, and YOLO. But that’s not always the wise choice. So take risks, but make them calculated risks. #heleneinswitzerland
  • For years I’ve struggled with my weight. Whoooo. I said it. And it feels good to get that off my chest. I’ve allowed my jet-setting lifestyle and had the excuse that I’m “just growing my business” instead of focusing on my health. #WWPartner I’m thrilled to join @ww’s brand new program #myWW! It is research based and backed by science to help me reach my health goals. I love that with myWW there’s a personalized assessment to scientifically match you to the plan that is structured unqiuely for you. Some of my role models like Oprah and Kate Hudson are on the program and I know that with my packed travel schedule this will help me on my wellness journey. This is NOT a diet. There are no foods that are off limits. Which is really essential to me so that I can try all the wonderful foods offered in new places, but do so mindfully. Y’all have been there for me as I moved abroad, moved home, and now I’m focusing on a healthy lifestyle. I hope you’ll join me on this journey of a different kind. I’m sharing an inside look into the personalized assessment in my stories so go check them out and be sure to click the link in my bio to learn more!
  • 2019 was a hard year. And not in the conventional sense. But for the first time in a while I was confronted with the future. I gained weight. I didn’t (and still don’t) have a set plan for the future. I didn’t finish writing my book. ⁣ But there are 3 things that were kind of incredible and you know what, I’m going to share about them:⁣ 1. I made nearly 5 times what I ever made at a corporate office and I did it on my blog and with the help of my husband. Working for yourself is scary in a weird way and I felt, for the first time, that this is something I can do the rest of my life. ⁣ 2. I moved continents. I had no idea the strain it would be on me mentally (even though I was warned) and it’s been tough. But for every single person that has reached out or been there for us THANK YOU. It means more to me than you’ll ever know. ⁣ 3. But my proudest moment is that I feel like WE connected. Y’all tagged me in pictures (#helenemademedoit) where you traveled or told you I inspired you to take a trip. You sent me emails telling me I helped you live out your dream. Some of y’all even flew to Europe and traveled WITH me. ⁣ I realize that I don’t have the biggest following, I’m not insta-famous, and I don’t think I ever will be. But the people that are here are actually kickass and many have become my real life friends.⁣ So here’s to 2020. It’s not going to be perfect but you can bet it’s going to be great. I love y’all. I mean it.
  • 2019 challenged me in ways I never thought possible. I spent my last 9 months living in Europe, traveled to over 130 cities, found my passion, and moved continents. Thank you for following this weird little journey and being so supportive.
  • Sometimes travel is mingled with magic. I know that sounds dramatic...but:⁣ The plan WASN’T to see the unending sea of tulip fields that day. We were supposed to head to Keukenhof, near Amsterdam in the Netherlands, to see the world’s largest spring garden. But our dog sitter’s train was two hours late so we booked it as fast as we could from Heidelberg to the Netherlands just in case. As we came upon the fields of silvery pastel pink tulips I screamed at Michael to stop. I had on a wrinkled dress & sports bra but I threw on my €3 @primark straw hat & gazed in awe at the countless flowers. Michael snapped pictures, we met the farmer (and asked permission to take pictures of the tulips.) And this was just the beginning of our trip. We met up with our friends where we strolled the cobbled streets of Bruges, Belgium. We ate not one, not two, but 3 waffles in a day. In our waffle pursuit we randomly stopped in the town of Kortrjik which turned out to be one of the coolest spots that we would have missed otherwise.⁣ From there we headed to Monet’s gardens for more flower gazing. We finished the trip with a few days in Paris. It was my friend’s first time so I was literally bursting at the seams. We parked our car & I hustled everyone to go take a walk. As we were taking some photos on my favorite bridge, Pont Alexander III, the sun started setting casting a cotton candy pink across the sky. Michael looked at me & said “Run!” And we did. Straight to the Eiffel Tower to watch the sky ignite. I tried taking photos & videos but they are all so shaky because I was laughing and crying and excited. ⁣ Our last night in Paris, Michael & I decided to walk around at night, just like in Midnight in Paris (my favorite movie.) Michael said he wanted a nightcap, and we stumbled into a fancy hotel bar. That just happened to be from the movie, which was serendipitous, since I planned to write a blog post on the locations from the movie!⁣ If there’s one lesson I’ve learned while traveling it’s that bumps in the road and unexpected mishaps often lead you to where you need to be. Or at the very least, they make good stories.
  • You know when someone talks about a place, and when you finally go, it’s not as grand as they painted it to be? Chamonix was the opposite. For years, my mom spoke about the illusive snow-capped peaks stretching in to the sky. And when I went for myself I was immediately enthralled. Not only was it mind-blowingly beautiful, the town itself looked like a story book. Complete with old timey art and posters and cafes serving decadent French cuisine. And I also found the best pastry I’ve ever tasted (pic 3), which, if you know me, is really saying a lot. But it was more than just the place, trip itself was fantastic. We drove the 5 and 1/2 hours from Heidelberg and toted the dogs along with us, who happen to be crazy about snow. After spending a week in Chamonix, we went sledding in mile long runs in Gstaad, Switzerland with our bright orange sleds (that we’d later drudge all the way back to America). We then made our way to Annecy, France where I literally ate my weight in cheese. Le Freti is an all you can eat Raclette restaurant and the restaurant owner stayed with us until the place closed. We drove over to the tiny country of Lichtenstein where we had the most magical hike in my life- it was quite literally a marshmallow world of glittering snow. Millie would whimper if we paused even for a moment. We capped off the trip in the Black Forest where we saw a dog sled race (one of Michael’s bucket list experiences.) Looking back on this trip I think to myself: who am I?! We didn’t take this trip for work or pictures or anything other than we wanted to see it. I don’t know if life will always look like this for me so I’m going to soak it up while I can. 🗻#heleneinfrance
  • 2019 was such a whirlwind I actually never even posted a single photo from the country of Latvia! It was cute and charming and filled with really good food. What I absolutely adored about coming here, besides the cool art nouveau buildings, was how quiet it is. This place, so far, is not at all over run with tourists and it still contains its old world charms. Is Riga on your list? #heleneinlatvia
