  • My first Christmas abroad I thought that it would be difficult. Michael’s mom has just passed away a few months before, we were in a new country, didn’t know the language, and we knew no one. But we were so busy we didn’t have time to be sad or miss home. ⁣ In a strange way, this Christmas has been harder. It’s as if we have enough time to stop and look around and things we have ignored finally resonate. ⁣ The truth is, Europe was kind of a 3 year escape. It’s something I don’t even like to admit but now that we’re home, reality seems to have settled in. ⁣ I’m often told on Instagram that I seem like I’m always happy. And I am an extremely happy person, but that’s not the entire story. I decide to be happy every day. And we all have to make that choice. Every single person is going through stuff. Some people are open about it or they tell friends, others just smile and keep going, others might act angry or honk their horn repeatedly when, really, the light JUST TURNED GREEN. ⁣ I guess this long caption is a reminder that the only perspective you get to decide on is your own. Things aren’t always perfect or happy (despite the outward appearance) so might as well choose to be kind. Merry Christmas eve, y’all.
  • I thought, since we live back to America, I would finally have it all together and send out a Christmas card for the first time in four years. JOKES ON ME. But I did post our Christmas card and letter on the blog! Thank y’all for following along on this very strange journey and being part of our story! #heleneandmichael
  • I’ll admit it: It’s around this time of year that I start to get a little sad. I love this season so much I don’t want it to end. I wish that I could store my memories in a bottle and open them up or relive the feeling. I know there’s a million more memories to be made but I can’t help but already feel nostalgic about now. I’ve been like this ever since I can remember and I thought I’d grow out of it but turns out... I just keep getting worse. Thankfully I have night like last night (more on stories) that make me forget to be sad or nostalgic and just live in the present 😂😍🎄 #helyeahheidelberg
  • Rudolph doesn’t get the credit that he deserves. Meanwhile people are watching the Holiday (garbage) and Home Alone (I mean it’s good, but is it GREAT?) and no one gives credit to this or Miracle 34th Street (1947 version pls) or Scrooge (1970 musical version). Name your favorite and least favorite below and I’m going to randomly pick some commenters to get some @bathandbodyworks candles because I have 40 and I think that might slightly be too much 🎄 Also shout out to @partyofalyssamatt for inspiring this caption 🙌🏻 #helenefortheholidays
  • “Helene, why did you move home if you love Europe so much?” I feel like my answer changes a bit every time I’m asked this question. Do I miss the magic and mayhem of living in Europe (especially this time of year)? Of course. But it was also harder than I can put into words in this short Instagram caption. I also love being home with family and friends and shopping at Target and Marshalls. And I know I can go back. Or if I don’t, I had an incredible 3 years of living in Heidelberg. A place I hadn’t even heard of until a few years ago. And that’s kind of cool that we don’t know exactly where life will take us. ⁣ This grainy video shows an accurate glimpse of the Christmas market: German voices chattering, gingerbread-like buildings lit up by the glow of lights on wooden stalls, and drinking copious amounts of Glühwein in ceramic mugs that warm your from the inside out. #helyeahheidelberg < click this link for more of my Heidelberg pics.
  • Sometimes I feel overwhelmed during the holidays. The myriad of parties, baking, presents, and feeling like I need to be on two places at once. I end up being a little disappointed in the fact that I can’t please everyone and certainly not myself. And then I watch It’s A Wonderful Life (and cry) and realize that life is a little more simple than we make it out to be. We have to just try our best and do the right thing and in the end that’s the best we can do. Whether that means buying Starbucks for the person behind you, adopting a dog, or just putting on a smile for a stranger. I know this is a little sappy but it’s Christmas and I’m feeling that way. So in case someone hasn’t told you today: merry Christmas and I think you’re wonderful. #helenefortheholidays
  • When people ask me what Christmas in Europe is like I’m suddenly at a loss for words. Tears prick my eyes as I think of London’s magical sea of never ending lights, or Heidelberg’s romantic market just below a 17th century sandstone castle, or Strasbourg’s mayhem of cluttered store fronts full to the brim of decor, or Vienna’s picturesque and pristine city of lights, or Tallinn’s perfect little slice of old world charm in the city center. I always thought Christmas meant being at home. But really, you can find Christmas all around the world. But in truth, it’s best in Europe. #heleneloveseurope
  • Tromping through the fluffiest snow we listened to the sounds of our footfalls and the dogs loping effortlessly. We looked and looked for the right tree, and then, there it was. Standing over 30 feet tall (we learned later) we all took turns to axe it down (for the record it took us 5 minutes.) We carried it home sticking out the truck bed then took 3 different attempts to get it up but... we did it (you can see all the Griswold Family Christmas vacation antics on stories. Including the time Michael nearly dropped it). Today was one of my favorite days this whole year. Swipe to see the tree in the woods with us next to it for perspective 😂🎄😂🎄 #heleneincolorado
  • The only sound we heard in the car from 9:30 am to nearly 7pm that night was soft Christmas music and the sound of me furiously tapping the keys of my laptop. Michael drove as I wrote and wrote and wrote. I was worried that our nearly two week long trip would cut I to my book writing schedule. When would I have the time?! But sitting in the car with the rhythm of the wheels my fingers never ceased. I wrote nearly 12 pages yesterday. To some that might not sound like a lot, to others it sounds like a ton, but I’m so excited. And I can’t wait for y’all to read this book one day. I don’t think it will be what you’re expecting. #helenewrites
