I love to see what others read. It gives me a little insight into their personality and what they find interesting. It's been a while since I've done a recent “reads” post, so here's the low down on some of my favorite books.
The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware
Full disclosure: I'm a little more than half-way through this book after starting on Wednesday. I LOVE it. It draws you in immediately. This is a thriller, and the plot keeps moving. The focus is on Lo, a travel journalist who boards a luxury cruise ship, only to discover this ship isn't so safe. You'll be hooked instantly.
One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I loved this story — thought provoking, dramatic, and displays love in a realistic way. The book focuses on Emma Blair who is forced to choose between two “loves of her life.” From start to finish I kept changing my mind about who she should choose and what I would do in this situation. I feel this book is introspective to a degree with relatable characters .
Modern Lovers by Emma Straub
I try not to not waste time on bad books (or bad wine, in case you're wondering.) This book has very little plot, though lots of character development. If you want a book that focuses on feelings and has no real direction, then go for it. I like twists, turns, and a point. My suggestion? Skip it. I did like Straub's The Vactioners. (See my review on that here).
13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff
This is a nonfiction account of the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the annex in Benghazi, Libya. True, it's told from one perspective, but it doesn't seem to be overly slanted or political. Instead it compels me to think about how we handle the military. What it impressed upon me was that things like this can and do happen. It makes you truly appreciate people brave enough to fight for freedom. It's not for the faint of heart. No happy ending here. But, this eye-opening book attempts to provide a glimpse into the realities of war.
Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty
Fair warning, I am OBSESSED with Liane Moriarty. I've read all her books. So when she came out with Truly, Madly, Guilty, I gobbled it up. This wasn't my favorite Moriarty book, but I liked it a lot. It follows her formula: we know something is wrong and the story hints and unfolds to reveal the heart of the mystery. This time, at a family gathering during a barbecue, six adults and a few children hang out innocently in the backyard. Their lives all intersect, but something goes horribly wrong. I found myself saying, “What happened at the damn barbeque??” So be prepared to wait it out. But it's worth the wait.
As someone who works for myself and am in the process of trying to move to Europe among other things, I always make time to read. See how I do that and get a free month of Audible here!
Also, I have a fun announcement today…. a Dallas Blogger Meet-up! I texted Sarah of Venus Trapped in Mars and said we gotta do this. She was game! So plans came together quickly. If you are in or around Dallas, come on DOWN. Or up. Or sideways…
This will be a casual, fun meet-up for anyone who wants to hang out. We'll be at The Grove at Harwood next Monday. If you're coming, email me: [email protected], so I can get a headcount.
This will be SO much fun, I hope you'll come!
